CURLING – POINTS TO PONDER

Speed of a game:

A game of Curling requires 15 minutes to complete an end. It means that for a complete game of 8 or 10 ends, you require 2 hours to 2.5 hours. If the play is delayed, players feel bored; they lose concentration and are also likely to feel the cold of the icy rink. Never delay your throw!

Timing of games:

In National, International and Championship level matches time watches are relied upon to monitor the speed of the games. The time watch is akin to the one used in chess tournaments with 75 earmarked for each team for a 10 end game. The time watch starts ticking as soon as the stone is set on a forward move, and, stops as soon as the skip or acting skip moves out of the play area. It is, therefore, essential for the skip or acting skip to move out of the playing area quickly. This curbs the easygoing attitude of teams to leisurely saunter to their position on the hack and wasting a lot of time in shooting.

The ambient temperature:

Normally, the ambient temperature is controlled at a typical 40 to 45° F at the neck level. This is good for the players besides it controls the relative humidity at a lower level. If the ambient temperature is not controlled, the ice has a tendency to build frost.

Free Guard Zone:

There are two types of FGZ – Free Guard Zone Rule. The European Rule refers to as 4 Stone FGZ Rule, whereas the Canadian Rule is known as 3 stone FGZ Rule.  According to this Rule, the first 4 stones in European and the first 3 stones in the Canadian version, lying in the Free Guard Zone should not be kicked out of the game. This ensures that the team, which has the last stone to hurl, is denied the opportunity of kicking out rival team’s stones.
