CURLING – STRATEGIES

“…The advantage of being clever is that it’s easy to play the fool.  The opposite is much more difficult…”

-Kurt Tucholsky

Shots:

Basically in curling there are only two kinds of shots available for a player.

  1. The draw shot.

  2. The take out shot.

Of course, there are very many variations of these two basic shots.  Your teams strategy hinges on which shot and which of it variation should be employed depending upon the position of your stones or a particular phase of the game.

 1.      The Draw Shot:

v     You can throw a stone short of the house, if you have to ‘guard’ a previously thrown stone inside the house.  This is known as Guard.

v     You have a front Guard in place.  If you want t this guard to be sent into the house, the gentle tapping shot is “Raise”.

There are many other variations.  But these two are important.

2.      The Take Out Shot:

v     A stone throne with the speed to firmly remove another stone - mostly your Rival Team’s stone - from the house - It is a “Normal” Take out shot.

In fact there are other variations like the “Peel”, “Hit & Roll”, “The Chip” etc, which are employed depending upon the situation.

Strategies:

The draw shots are mainly meant for aggressive play with a view to score more points.

The takeout shot is primarily meant for a defensive mode of play.  Here you ensure that your rival’s stones are kept clear off the house.
